Coffee machine error codes, messages and indicators

Is your machine showing a code, message or flashing indicator pattern? Below are confirmed meanings for the relevant Philips, Saeco, Nivona and Melitta families, safe actions and manufacturer manuals. Match the exact model first — the same number or symbol can mean something else on another generation.

Before you use the table

The same number or indicator can mean different things across product lines. Nivona manuals describe Error 8 differently by generation, while Melitta publishes messages and specific indicator combinations rather than one shared E/F map. Every set therefore states its model scope, exclusions, verification date and sources.

Verified codes, messages and indicators

Each table belongs to a specific device family. A normal cleaning or refill light is not automatically a fault code — the exact sequence documented in the manual matters.

Philips and Saeco — domestic machines with a display

Show codes, safe actions and sourcesModels in this family: Philips 4300 and 4400, Philips 5400 and 5500, Saeco Xelsis Deluxe and Xelsis Suprema, Saeco GranAroma and GranAroma Deluxe

This table applies to

  • Philips 4300 and 4400
  • Philips 5400 and 5500
  • Saeco Xelsis Deluxe and Xelsis Suprema
  • Saeco GranAroma and GranAroma Deluxe

Do not apply it to

  • Other Philips fully automatic ranges not listed under “Applies to”

The scope of this table is limited to the ranges listed above. Other generations may use indicator lights, icons or partly similar numbers with different diagnostic meanings. Do not use this table unless your model manual maps the code explicitly.

  • Baristina, Barista Brew, SENSEO®, L’OR Barista, Cafissimo and Philips filter and Turkish coffee makers

These are separate designs and do not use the EP automatic-machine code table. Interpret their indicator lights, icons and messages using the manual for the specific device family.

  • Saeco Professional, including Royal OTC

The professional line has its own code meanings. For instance E11 there indicates a break in the boiler temperature sensor circuit, and E19 a mains frequency problem. Applying the consumer table to these machines leads to a wrong diagnosis.

If that does not help, push the small plug of the detachable cord firmly into the rear socket. If the code still returns, contact a service centre.

Another code, message or indicator pattern

Any other code — 02, 10, 15, 20 or 22 for example — has no single, universally applicable meaning. The manufacturer advises contacting a service centre. Do not assign a meaning from a random table found online: the same numbers mean different things across product lines.

Where the manufacturer publishes no number map

Nivona models without a public numeric code map

This is not a gap to fill from an unofficial table. In the manuals for these models, NIVONA does not assign user-facing meanings to error numbers. The manufacturer tells the user to note the exact message or number, switch the machine off, unplug it and give service the model and serial number. NICR 520/530 use display symbols; the S1–S13 labels in the manual diagram must not be interpreted as error codes 1–13.

Models covered by this note

  • NICR 520 and 530 — symbol messages, no numeric error-code map
  • NICR 830 and variants from its two manuals: 831, 840, 845, 850 and 855
  • NIVO 8101, 8103, 8107 and 8112
  • NIVO 9101 and 9103

Verified:

Melitta publishes no shared numeric E/F code map

Public Melitta consumer manuals contain no E01, E02 or F01 table shared across bean-to-cup machines. The manufacturer documents text messages and exact indicator combinations, which are mapped below by model. Normal CLEAN, descaling, refill-water and empty-tray reminders are not fault codes. If a machine shows an undocumented service number, record it with the exact model and do not assign a meaning from a forum.

Models covered by this note

  • Current: Latticia OT, LatteSelect, Avanza 600, Purista 300, Barista Smart/SE, CI Touch, CI, Varianza CSP, Passione OT and Solo
  • Discontinued: Barista T/TS/TSP, Passione, Varianza CS, Gourmet, Lounge, Bistro, Bar and Lattea
